Ai! An interjection as relational form

Peter Aers (Gent, 1973) behaalde een Master in de Wijsbegeerte in 1998 en maakte de toneelopleiding aan De Kleine Academie af in 2003. Hij gaat op zoek naar wat de verhouding individu/maatschappij kan betekenen. Het uitgangspunt van die verhouding is de verdwijning van dat individu. In zijn eerste eigen werk Boedapest / Een oefening in verdwijnen in 2005 onderzocht het effect dat materiële welvaart heeft op de vorming van de identiteit. De interesse en fascinatie ging daarbij uit naar daklozen en bedelaars. Samen met Tijs Ceulemans ging hij gedurende 1 maand naar Boedapest zonder geld en extra kledij. Elke dag opnieuw moesten ze een manier vinden om aan eten te geraken en waar ze zouden slapen. Het omgaan met honger, verlangen, verveling, frustraties en mentale en onderlinge spanningen moest op een creatieve manier worden opgelost. Een eenmalige voorstelling, onmiddellijk na aankomst in België, sloot deze maand af. In 2009 werkten zij opnieuw samen aan New York - San Francisco / The Hidden Tracks, een documentaire voorstelling over hobo’s in Amerika en de zoektocht van beide makers naar deze illegale reizigers op goederentreinen en vrijheid.

Beide voorstellingen werden gekenmerkt door een eerlijke openheid, omdat ze onmiddellijk bij terugkomst, zonder voorafgaande ontmoetingen, op het podium stapten en al improviserend hun ervaringen deelden met het publiek.

Zowel in de creatiefase als in de uitvoering van een voorstelling staan mensen centraal en het contact met hen. De juiste context creëren om dat contact aan te moedigen, vormt één van de uitgangspunten. Zo werkte hij samen met amateurspelers, daklozen, inwoners van het kanaaldorp

Doornzele, bewoners van de stad Münster, en deed hij vrijwilligerswerk na Katrina in New Orleans, de palliatieve sector, en reed hij ‘s nachts met een taxi. Verder werkte Peter Aers samen met Dora Garcìa voor meerdere performances (The Prophets - The Beggar’s Opera – The Romeos - Beggar - You can’t be there – The Inadequates) en speelde hij met Aitana Cordero (3 ways to Master a kiss) en Campo (FivePeople).

"Het feit dat ik niet weet waar ik met bezig ben zet mij er toe aan om te blijven zoeken. Op een manier die ik niet in de hand heb. Jezelf verliezen, verwaarlozen en vooral kapot maken. Zo zit ik al drie dagen te wachten op iets dat niet komt. En tijdens dat wachten verandert mijn gevoel van pure armoede naar gelukzaligheid."

In 2005 werkte Tijs Ceulemans aan het theaterproject BOEDAPEST/EEN OEFENING IN VERDWIJNEN, samen met Peter Aers. Daarin stond de ervaring centraal om uit de persoonlijke veiligheidszone te komen en de confrontatie met het onbekende aan te gaan waarbij zowel het zoeken als het vinden kan worden omgezet naar een verhaal. Deze werkwijze zorgt er bij Tijs voor dat het eindproduct van een ervaring op een eerlijke en pure manier kan vertaald worden naar een publiek.

In 2009 hebben Tijs Ceulemans en Peter Aers hun volgende project gevonden in samenwerking met detheatermaker: NEW YORK - SAN FRANCISCO / THE HIDDEN TRACKS. Ook hier stond de ervaring centraal. Zelf ondernemen wat je probeert te verwoorden. “Door jezelf tot het uiterste te drijven in een onbekende omgeving, geef je, volgens mij, jezelf de kans om alles vanuit een ander perspectief te bekijken. Uitdaging zorgt voor een boeiend resultaat, zowel negatief als positief.” (interview, Radio Klara)

Voor het volgende project, samen met Peter Aers en Leentje Vandenbussche X / EEN OEFENING IN VERDWIJNEN (2011-2012) gaat hij verder op deze manier. In deze oefening zal hij zo diep mogelijk proberen te gaan om zo alle scrupules en drempels van zich af te werpen. Zichzelf verliezen in het zoeken om zo te hopen een leegte te vinden die hij kan vullen met dat gene waar hij bang voor is. Het wordt een oefening in verdwijnen. Alle rommel die teveel is gooien we van ons af. Alleen het hoogstnoodzakelijke blijft over.

Leentje Vandenbussche (Brugge, 1984) maakt performances vanuit grafische ervarings studies. Tijdens haar opleiding 3Dimensionele vormgeving aan de Koninklijke Academie voor Schone Kunsten Gent heeft ze dit medium verder onderzocht en afgetast. Centrale thema’s in haar werk zijn de openbare ruimte, voyeurisme en het zoeken naar een toegankelijk concept. In 2005 resulteerde dit in een modeshow/performance Onder onder in samenwerking met Siets Bloemen. Ze beëindigde haar opleiding in eenvoud en schoonheid met haar performance Beckett op zijn plaats (2006), het startschot van Alles en Niets. In 2007 performde ze zelf met Beckett van A tot Z waarin ze alle woorden van Wachten op Godot in alfabetische volgorde reciteerde. Na haar opleiding theaterwetenschappen aan de Universiteit van Antwerpen heeft ze zich in Alles verdiept, het vervolg en sluitende luik van Alles en Niets. Vijf jaar na de eerste fascinatie en studie van deze onderwerpen, ging in 2010 O in première. Deze werd, ondanks de veelheid van het onderwerp, een sobere doch alles-omvattende productie. Samen met het tweede luik werd ook de aansluitende tentoonstelling van Alles en Niets met de grafische studies op punt gesteld.

Momenteel werkt ze samen met Peter Aers en Tijs Ceulemans aan X / Een oefening in verdwijnen te verwachten in april-mei 2012.

NL: WTP#04 is dé ideale gelegenheid om een informeel netwerkmoment te organiseren met collega’s. Heel wat kunstenaars die deel uitmaakten van de vorige Working Title Platforms zijn intussen in première gegaan en verdienen verdere aandacht. In samenwerking met Caravan Production, Drop Prod, Entropie Production en Mokum nodigen we tien kunstenaars uit om hun werk voor te stellen en een inkijk te geven in hun toekomstplannen. To be continued start met een Pecha Kucha, het bekende format dat werd ontwikkeld door architecten en vormgevers om korte, creatieve presentaties te geven (20 slides gedurende 20 seconden). Daarna volgen rondetafelgesprekken om dieper in te zoomen op het artistiek parcours van de kunstenaars. We sluiten de middag af met een diner, alvorens de parcours van WTP#04 van start gaan.

FR: WTP#04 est l'occasion idéale pour organiser un moment de rencontres informel de collègues. Beaucoup d'artistes présents au précédent Working Title Platforms ont présenté les premières de leurs créations et méritent une réelle attention. En collaboration avec les agences de management et d'accompagnement Caravan Productions, Drop Prod, Entropie Production et Mokum, nous invitons 10 artistes à présenter leurs travaux, proposer et donner un aperçu de leurs projets à venir. "To Be Continued" commence avec un PechaKucha, court format de présentation développé par des architectes et designers (20 images, 20sec/image) pour introduire ces 10 travaux d'artistes. Cette présentation sera suivie de tables rondes de discussions pour approfondir l'échange sur les parcours et les ambitions des artistes. Nous conclurons cette après midi avec un dîner avant que le programme du WTP#04 ne reprenne.

Open House Brussels (May 17th to 19th 2012)

For the first time in Brussels 24 artistic laboratories and alternative management offices have joined together to show their practices and research in an Open House event dedicated to both public and professionals. Open House will propose two morning debates, completed with afternoon guided tours and artistic parcours offering the public a chance to get introduced to the structures’ working process and the artists who bind them together.

On Saturday May 19th 2012 Vti, Kunstenloket and Îles organise First Aid Sessions, open advice sessions for artists.

From 10:00 - 11:00 Liesbeth Dejonghe (OKo, the Flemish Federation of Employers in the performing arts and music sector) presents an overview of the recent developments in the status of artists within the Belgian social security, followed by time for questions.

From 11:00-13:00 collaborators of the VTI, Kunstenloket, Îles and the alternative management offices Mokum, Caravan Production and Margarita Production are available for free and personal information sessions to help artists with their questions about project development, artistic matters, subsidy applications, legal and social matters, networks and contacts, … Each organisation will do this from its specific field of experience.

From 14 to 26 April 2012 Lilia Mestre and Marcos Simoes are in residency in the artlab ZSenne in the frame of their project Ai! An interjection as relational form.

During this period there are daily showings of their work in the gallery of ZSenne.

Mestre and Simoes see the gallery space as a place to present oeuvres and documents. They will be going from the black box to the white cube questioning the place of performance as a life momentary form to the place of the object as permanent evidence.

Their plan is to work with both formats and challenge their status in contemporary art. Mestre and Simoes want to develop systems that allow us to translate and relocate performance and document.

How to translate events from a black box to the white cube? How to see the document as performance? And how to see the performance as a document by changing its formats?

The space of the gallery is a permeable space by the constant relation to the outside world. The artists are not in an excluded environment anymore where the audience is invited to come in at a certain point. The constant visibility of the construction of the artwork will be fundamental on the construction of systems. The circularity of the inside and the outside is an aspect that cannot be denied.

Ontmoeting Katho Kunst en Cultuur met Peter Aers, Leentje Vandenbussche & Tijs Ceulemans

Op 16 april 2012 ontmoeten Leentje, Peter en Tijs de studenten van de opleiding Kunst en Cultuur (Hogeschool Katho) in Kunstencentrum BUDA, Kortrijk. De drie makers zullen het met hen hebben over de voorstelling MEDIUM.

Indien we je alle details van het sterven zouden kunnen vertellen, zou je dat dan willen weten?

Er wacht een ruimte voor 60 mensen. En vijf doodsoorzaken. Het verdeelt jullie.
Kanker. Ongeluk. AIDS. Falend hart. Ouderdom.
Kennis is macht. Of misschien net niet.

MEDIUM maakt deel uit van het drieluik LIGHT, MEDIUM, STRONG. Drie voorstellingen die tijd, kennis en het definitieve belichten t.a.v. de dood. Een resultaat van X / Een oefening in verdwijnen.

Open House Brussels

For the first time in Brussels 25 artistic laboratories and alternative management offices have joined together to show their practices and research in an Open House event dedicated to both public and professionals.

Focusing rather on artistic research processes than on final products, these structures provide national and international artists with time, space and tools to develop their works. With Open House these multi-disciplinary organisations take the opportunity to strengthen their bonds and show once again that Brussels is more than ever a creative and dynamic artists’ city.

The Open House event will consist of two morning debates and three afternoon artistic parcours presenting the structures’ working process as well as the artists who bind them together.

Pour la première fois à Bruxelles, 25 laboratoires artistiques et bureaux de management alternatif se réunissent pour présenter leurs pratiques et recherches au cours d’un événement dédié tant au grand public qu’aux professionnels.

Centrées sur les processus de recherche artistique plutôt que sur la production de résultats finaux, ces structures offrent aux artistes nationaux et internationaux le temps, l’espace et les outils pour développer leur travail. A travers Open House, ces organisations multidisciplinaires se donnent l’opportunité de renforcer leurs liens et de montrer une fois encore que Bruxelles est plus que jamais une ville d’artistes dynamique et créative.

L’événement consistera en deux matinées de débats et trois après-midis de parcours artistique présentant le travail des structures ainsi que les artistes qui les relient entre elles.

Open House is een samenwerking tussen de 25 artistieke laboratoria en alternatieve managementbureaus uit Brussel. Tijdens dit evenement tonen ze voor de eerste keer samen hun werk en onderzoek aan professionelen uit het veld en het brede publiek.

‘Inside Superamas’ geeft de aftrap van de samenwerking die het performancecollectief en Vooruit de komende jaren aangaan. De leden van Superamas zullen ruimte krijgen om het podiumprogramma mee te ontwikkelen en erop in te breken. Op deze avond zullen de Superamas samen met air-hostess Elisa Benureau en gogo-danseres Yalda scènes uit hun repertoire hernemen. Deze korte performances worden daarna op de korrel genomen door de kunstcritici Elke Van Campenhout, Frank Van De Veire en Rudi Laermans.

‘Inside Superamas’ is the kick-off of the collaboration between Superamas and Arts Centre Vooruit during the next couple of years. The members of Superamas will be given space and time to co-develop the theatre programmation of Vooruit and break into it.

On this evening Superamas will re-enact scenes from their repertoire, together with air-hostess Elisa Benureau and gogo-danser Yalda. These short performances will then be criticised on the spot by art critics Elke Van Campenhout, Frank Van De Veire and Rudi Laermans.

How do artists work today? How do they speak about their method? How can one make a start with documenting, discussing and sharing the hybrid and heterogeneous practices that underpin the performing arts today? How can the informal and embodied discourses, as well as the implicit knowledge they carry, find a wider recognition and accessibility? A series of monthly salons, organized by Sarma on different locations in Brussels, create a live research environment for makers and researchers to address issues of new artistic practices and discourses.

Many performance artists work with scores or self-imposed constraints. Yet what do scores and constraints do precisely? How do they function and how do they effect the organisation of a working process or a performance situation? And more widely: what can they mean for today’s larger artistic landscape? Several artists will enter into dialogue around these questions.

Afgelopen maandag 5 december vond de terugkeervoorstelling van Leentje Vandenbussche, Tijs Ceulemans en Peter Aers plaats in De Werf te Brugge.

Meteen na hun terugkomst in België gingen de makers op het podium. Op die manier vertelden ze zo doorleefd en eerlijk als mogelijk hun ervaring met het sterven aan de Ganges in India.
