Assassins is a musical written by Stephen Sondheim which explores the
dark side of American history. It premiered in 1991 when the United
States first went into Iraq in the “Gulf war”. Two weeks later it
closed. The general populous couldn't accept a work that was so
anti-patriotic. It was set to have a revival on Broadway in 2001 but
the World Trade Center came down. Again it wasn’t appropriate to put on
a show that questions the governments role in collapsing the American
Dream. In 2004, Assassins, a show about people who killed or tried to
kill American presidents, finally had its moment of success after
George Bush had been president for 3 years. Now it’s 2009 and Barack
Obama has been sworn in as the 44th president of the United States. He
has also received more death threats then all of the previous
presidents combined. Is Assassins topical? Completely.
